Jochen Ulrich
Jochen Ulrich (* 3 August 1944 in Osterode am Harz; † 10 November 2012[1][2] in Linz)[3] was a German choreographer and dancer.
His life
After studying at the Cologne Institute for Stage Dance from 1964 to 1967, Ulrich made his debut as a dancer at the Cologne Opera in 1967. By 1970 his choreographic work was already attracting national attention. In 1971, together with Helmut Baumann, Jürg Burth and Gray Veredon, he co-founded the Cologne Dance Forum, which he directed from 1979[4] and supported a number of talented young dancers from all over Europe, including the future choreographer Richard Wherlock.
In 1970 he won the Berlin Critics' Prize[2][3].
From 2000 Ulrich was director of ballet at the Tiroler Landestheater in Innsbruck. There he created the ballet Caravaggio, based on the life and work of the Italian painter. Director Rainer Mennicken brought him to Linz in 2006, where he enjoyed great success with Dennis Russell Davies and the Bruckner Orchestra Linz, among others.
His style was characterised by athletic and technical extensions of his dance impulses.
He died in Linz in November 2012 after a long, serious illness[1][2][3] and is buried in Cologne's Südfriedhof[5].
